The Application Process

  1. Choose Your Program and Institution:
    • Research and choose the university or college that best suits your academic goals. The U.S. offers programs across multiple disciplines, so find one that aligns with your interests.
  2. Standardized Tests:
    • Depending on your program, you may need to take standardized tests such as the SAT/ACT for undergraduate programs or GRE/GMAT for postgraduate programs. For English proficiency, IELTS or TOEFL is required.
  3. Submit Your Application:
    • Apply directly to your chosen universities through their online portals. Each institution may have different requirements such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and proof of English proficiency.
  4. Acceptance and I-20 Form:
    • Once accepted, you will receive an I-20 form from your institution. This document is crucial for your student visa application.
  5. Apply for an F-1 Student Visa:
    • After receiving your I-20 form, you can apply for an F-1 visa, which is the most common visa for international students in the USA.

Student Visa Requirements

To study in the USA, you need to secure an F-1 student visa. The process is straightforward, but it’s important to ensure you meet the eligibility requirements:

  1. I-20 Form from a SEVP-Approved School:
    • The I-20 form confirms your acceptance into a SEVP-approved school and is essential for your visa application.
  2. Proof of Financial Resources:
    • You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and other costs during your stay in the USA.
  3. English Language Proficiency:
    • You need to submit proof of English proficiency through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS, unless your program is in a different language or you come from an English-speaking country.
  4. SEVIS Fee Payment:
    • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, which is required for maintaining your information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  5. Visa Interview:
    • Schedule an interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Be prepared to discuss your academic plans, finances, and reasons for studying in the U.S.
  6. Visa Fee:
    • The visa application fee is approximately USD 160.

Work During Studies

The USA offers limited work opportunities for international students, but they can still work part-time to gain experience and support their living expenses.

  • On-Campus Employment:
    • As an international student on an F-1 visa, you are allowed to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during breaks.
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT):
    • CPT is a work authorization for students to gain work experience in their field of study. It is usually integrated into the curriculum and can be part-time or full-time.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT):
    • OPT allows students to work off-campus in their field of study for up to 12 months after completing their degree. Students in STEM fields can extend OPT for an additional 24 months.

Post-Study Work Opportunities

One of the biggest advantages of studying in the USA is the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows students to stay and work in the country after graduation.

  • Optional Practical Training (OPT):
    • OPT is available to F-1 students for up to 12 months after graduation. Students in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are eligible for a 24-month extension, allowing them to work in the USA for up to 3 years after completing their studies.
  • H-1B Visa:
